Rest
by Samuel D. Hunter

An isolated retirement home. A record-breaking blizzard. And the quiet, profound moments that define us.

From the brilliant mind of MacArthur "Genius" Grant recipient Samuel D. Hunter (acclaimed author of The Whale), we are proud to present the deeply moving, poignant, and darkly humorous masterpiece, Rest.

Set in a fading, isolated retirement home in northern Idaho that is on the verge of shutting its doors forever, only three elderly residents and two young, underpaid staff members remain. As a historic, record-breaking blizzard descends upon the town, burying the facility in snow and cutting off the outside world, a sudden crisis strikes: one of the residents, struggling with profound memory loss, wanders out into the blinding white storm.

What follows is an exquisitely written, intimate, and surprisingly funny exploration of what it means to grow old, to remember, and to hold onto one another when everything else fades away. Hunter’s signature warmth, deep empathy, and sharp wit turn a simple room into a universe of human connection. Rest is a powerful testament to the quiet dignity of everyday lives and the unexpected families we make along the way.

Runtime: Approximately 90 to 100 minutes performed without an intermission.

Content Advisory: The play features honest, emotionally raw depictions of advanced aging, severe dementia/memory loss, end-of-life care, and discussions of mortality and grief. Recommended for ages 14 and up (high school and older) due to mature themes, heavy emotional content, and some strong language.
